Hunting of native Australian wildlife in NSW National Parks

In early June 2009, the Hon Robert Brown (Shooters Party) introduced a private member's bill into NSW parliament.  This bill, the Game and Feral Animal Control Amendment Bill 2009 would, if adopted, allow recreational shooters to shoot  native Australian animals in NSW National Parks.

Wildlife Advocate coordinated a significant campaign against this bill including an online petition, advising concerned people of public rallies and sending a comprehensive submission to all
NSW parliamentarians.

As a result, all major parties (Labor, Liberals, Nationals and the Greens) have publically declared their opposition to the Shooters Party bill.

We can notch this one up for the good guys.

Safari Hunting of Crocodiles in the Northern Territory

Wildlife Advocate has consistently argued against the safari hunting of saltwater crocodiles in the Northern Territory on animal welfare and regulatory compliance grounds.

The safari hunting of saltwater crocodiles has once again been averted with the Commonwealth Minister for the Environment, Peter Garratt rejecting the NT Government's plans.

Wildlife Advocate has also reached resolution in favour of our native Australian wildlife on the following:

  • Amendment of Californian legislation to permit the importation and use of kangaroo products
  • Plans by an Army unit to acquire a possum as a mascot

Wildlife Advocate has also made submissions or written letters on the following:

  • Review of the national  Code of Practice for the Humane Shooting of Kangaroos
  • draft Wildlife Trade Management Plans for the Commercial Harvest of Bennett’s Wallabies on King and Flinder’s Islands (Tasmania)
  • Federal Parliamentary Inquiry into the Impact on Agriculture of Pest Animals

Wildlife Advocate asks its members, and members of the public, to identify issues affecting the safety, freedom and independence of native Australian wildlife.
