Public Demonstration (Sydney)

Wildlife Advocate is joining like-minded groups and individuals in promoting a Demonstration Against The Slaughter of Kangaroos in the ACT.  Be outside NSW Parliament House (Macquarie Street, Sydney) at 12:00pm - 12:45pm on Thursday, 7 July 2010

This demonstration is to bring public attention to the slaughter of up to 1890 kangaroos, and countless numbers of joeys, in Nature Parks around Canberra.

ACT Kangaroo Management Plan

The first ACT Kangaroo Management Plan has been released.

Whilst the plan claims to be scientifically based it contains many subjective and unsubstantiated value judgements such as 'overabundance of kangaroos' and 'too many kangaroos'.  These subjective statements are made in an evidentiary vacuum as the plan does not set out what is an appropriate number, or density of, kangaroos on the various land types and/or land use categories.

Wildlife Advocate will continue to engage with the ACT government over its treatment of kangaroos as scapegoats.

Destruction/Non-Commercial Licences

Whilst the commercial kangaroo harvesting industry has been the subject of much debate and campaigning by Wildlife Advocate and others, there is still a dark underbelly in the issue and management of non-commercial or destruction licenses.

Wildlife Advocate has received numerous reports of National Parks and Wildlife officers (or equivalent):

  • issuing such licences without proper investigation or validation of the landholders claims of damage;

  • failing to check that the conditions of such licences are complied with (eg. that kangaroos are shot humanely)

  • failing to investigate claims of illegal shooting

Wildlife Advocate is undertaking a comprehensive investigation of the management practices of National Parks and Wildlife Services across Australia and will be presenting its findings to government later this year.
